Effects of relative orientation of the molecules on electron transport in molecular devices

Effects of relative orientation of the molecules on electron transport in molecular devices are studied by non-equilibrium Green's function method based on density functional theory. In particular, two molecular devices, with the planer Au7_{7} and Ag3_{3} clusters sandwiched between the Al(100) electrodes are studied. In each device, two typical configurations with the clusters parallel and vertical to the electrodes are considered. It is found that the relative orientation affects the transport properties of these two devices completely differently. In the Al(100)-Au7_7-Al(100) device, the conductance and the current of the parallel configuration are much larger than those in the vertical configuration, while in the Al(100)-Ag3_{3}-Al(100) device, an opposite conclusion is obtained

Experimental realization of optimal asymmetric cloning and telecloning via partial teleportation

We report an experimental realization of both optimal asymmetric cloning and telecloning of single photons by making use of partial teleportation of an unknown state. In the experiment, we demonstrate that, conditioned on the success of partial teleportation of single photons, not only the optimal asymmetric cloning can be accomplished, but also one of two outputs can be transfered to a distant location, realizing the telecloning. The experimental results represent a novel way to achieve the quantum cloning and may have potential applications in the context of quantum communication.Comment: 4 pages and 4 figure

Experimental Construction of Optical Multi-qubit Cluster States From Bell States

Cluster states serve as the central physical resource for the measurement-based quantum computation. We here present a simple experimental demonstration of the scalable cluster-state-construction scheme proposed by Browne and Rudolph. In our experiment, three-photon cluster states are created from two Bell states using linear optical devices. By observing a violation of three-particle Mermin inequality of ∣∣=3.10±0.03|| = 3.10\pm0.03 , we also for the first time report a genuine three-photon entanglement. In addition, the entanglement properties of the cluster states are examined under σz\sigma_z and σx\sigma_x measurements on a qubit.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitte

Fumigant Activity of Eight Plant Essential Oils Against Workers of Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta

Plant essential oils from eight plant species were tested for their insecticidal activities against the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invcita, by using a fumigation bioassay. This study reveals that the mortalities after treatment of the workers of red imported fire ants varied according to the classification of workers, oil type, dosage, and exposure time. Among the essential oils tested, strong insecticidal activity was observed with the essential oils of camphor (Cinnamomum camphora), artemisia annua (Artemisia annua), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), mugwort (Artemisia argyi), and wintergreen (Ilex chinensis). Ant mortalities from chrysanthemum oil (Dendranthema indicum), turpentine oil (Pinus massoniana), and forsythia oil (Forsythia suspense) treatments were significantly lower than those from the previously mentioned five essential oil treatments. This study showed that camphor, artemisia annua, eucalyptus, mugwort, and wintergreen oils may have potential to be used as substitutes for chemical insecticides

Impact of V-ets Erythroblastosis Virus E26 Oncogene Homolog 1 Gene Polymorphisms Upon Susceptibility to Autoimmune Diseases

V-ets erythroblastosis virus E26 oncogene homolog 1 (ETS1) is recognized as a gene of risk to autoimmune diseases (ADs). Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ETS1 (rs1128334 G\u3eA and rs10893872 T\u3eC) were considered associated with ADs risk. However, the results remain conflicting. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate more precise estimations of any relationship. We searched PubMed, OvidSP, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases (papers published prior to September 12, 2014) and extracted data from eligible studies. Meta-analysis was performed using the STATA 12.0 software. Random effect model or fixed effect model were chosen according to the study heterogeneities. A total of 11 studies including 7359 cases (9660 controls) for rs1128334 and 8 studies including 5419 cases (7122 controls) for rs10893872 were involved in this meta-analysis. Overall, our results showed that there were significant associations for rs1128334 with AD risk in 5 genetic models, both in pooled analysis and in systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) subgroup, and in 3 genetic models of the uveitis subgroup. Although for rs10893872, the results showed that there were significant associations in allele model both in pooled analysis and in SLE subgroup. As a conclusion, this meta-analysis demonstrated that these 2 SNPs (rs1128334 and rs10893872) in ETS1were associated with ADs risk
